Stage 4 Bedsores: A Sign of Neglect

October 14, 2024

Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, are all too common, especially for people who are bedridden for a long time. Despite their commonality, bedsores should not happen with proper care. Stage 4 bedsores are a result of severe neglect and can be devastating.

What are Bedsores?

Bedsores are injuries to the skin and underlying tissues caused by prolonged pressure on certain parts of the body. These sores usually develop on areas like the back of the head, arms, buttocks, heels and ankles – areas where the skin is in constant contact with a bed or wheelchair. In extreme cases, like what we recently saw, a patient’s bedsores on the buttocks had progressed so much that they reached the bone and tendons, a clear sign of prolonged immobility and lack of care.

Preventing Bedsores

Bedsores are most common in bedridden or wheelchair-bound people who cannot move frequently. Without regular repositioning and proper care, bedsores can develop and worsen fast. But with proper care, bedsores—especially in the later stages—are almost always preventable. Unfortunately, when stage 3 or stage 4 bedsores occur, it’s often a sign of neglect or even abuse.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 Bedsores: These are less severe and may not always be a sign of neglect but still need attention.

Stage 3 Bedsores: At this stage, the sores have penetrated the two layers of skin and affected the fatty tissue beneath. Proper care can prevent bedsores from reaching this stage.

Stage 4 Bedsores: The most severe form where the sores have gone deep into the muscles, tendons, and even ligaments. Stage 4 bedsores are life-threatening and can lead to severe complications.

If stage 3 or 4 bedsores occur, it’s neglect. Proper medical attention and repositioning can prevent bedsores from reaching these stages. If you or a loved one has stage 4 bedsores, act fast. Call us now—Attorney Tim Chelpaty will help you get justice.
